I was told in college that two of the most powerful words available to any advertiser are FREE and NEW. Of course, as we know, that over the years, the word free comes in many variations has been exaggerated by advertising lingo. For example, this includes:
- Free* (The * lists conditions most people never read but eventually wish they had.)
- Free Trial (Sometimes it’s genuine; sometimes it is not. Sometimes You end up getting sucked into some nasty monthly payment.)
- Risk-Free (Strangely enough, this implies that there may actually be a risk.)
- BOGO (buy one, get one) Free (However, as of late, BOGO now means BOGO half-off.)
- Free and Clear (Typically used when buying large items.)
However, despite the various meanings of free, it is still an unbelievably powerful and influential word which magnetizes us as consumers. Who doesn’t want and like free stuff? But how, where, and why “free” is used is an important part of the equation which can either draw you in or push you away.
Genuinely Free Deals Are TOTALLY Alluring — If There’s a Good Reason
Even though People love free, they are clearly leary of it. They want to feel like they deserve the item or that there’s another good reason for it to be free.
If something is free, and there’s a good reason for it to be free, consumers want it and love it. Free samples of food in the aisles of grocery stores or buy bulk stores (Costco, Sams, and BJs) always go like crazy. People know that free samples to lure them into buying a full box or package of that item. This is a fair transaction.
Another example is If someone puts a TV on Craiglist for free in order to make space for a new TV. then that is a good reason for the item to be free.
Also, you can get free products for spending a certain amount of money which is popular. For example, spend $85 and get a free tote bag or bottle of wine or perfume. Yes, this is a good deal. The thought is, “I spent more than I wanted to, so I get a reward.” This is the reason why genuine BOGO offers are so huge and popular.
